The flickering neon sign of the diner cast long shadows as Amelia scooped up the dropped wallet. She examined it carefully, her expression guarded. The leather was supple, expensive. Inside, a veritable fortune.

"Just my luck," she murmured, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. She had been burned before – by promises, by scams, by people. This felt like another one, another test of her resolve.
