He tossed the invitation onto his desk, the glossy surface reflecting the cluttered room. The high school reunion. The phrase felt cloying, the idea of nostalgia distasteful. He’d worked hard to leave that era behind, to become someone new.

He swiveled in his chair, staring out the window at the cityscape, the towers of glass and steel a stark contrast to the small town he’d left. He’d built a life here, a life away from the whispers and judgments of his youth.

The weight of the unopened envelope pressed down on him, a heavy reminder of a past he'd preferred to forget. He picked it up, then dropped it. Perhaps, he decided, he had a headache.
