The invitation sat on the desk amongst stacks of papers, a unwelcome guest at the edge of his vision. He took a deep breath, trying to dispel the feeling of being closed in. The high school reunion.

He thought of the people, the cliques, the dramas that, at the time, seemed so important. Now, they felt irrelevant, distant. The very idea of returning felt… wrong.

He picked up a pen and began to scribble on a notepad, a desperate attempt to distract himself from the rising anxiety. The invitation remained, a small, yet powerful, weight on the surface of his world.
