A chill ran down Leo's spine as he watched David re-shelve a book in the shared bookcase. The cover looked familiar. He paused, feigning interest in his own textbook, but his peripheral vision zeroed in on the volume. It was the same worn paperback he'd been reading last week, the one he’d also mentioned at length in his journal.

His heart thumped in his chest. He took a long, steadying breath. David hadn’t borrowed the book; he'd stated as much. But there it was, back on the shelf, slightly askew. He tried to dismiss the thought, to tell himself it was just a coincidence, that he was being overly sensitive.

“Hey,” he said, forcing a smile. "Catching up on some reading?" His voice sounded brittle, thin. David turned, a flicker of something unreadable in his gaze.
