Mark slammed the laptop shut, the sound echoing in his otherwise silent study. He let out a frustrated grunt. He’d done the test as a lark, a way to connect with his heritage. Now, he was staring at a list of names he didn't recognize, connected to him in some way he could not fathom.

He needed a drink. He went to the liquor cabinet, pouring himself a generous amount of whiskey. He walked over to the window, the amber liquid swirling in his glass. The city lights twinkled in the distance, a world away.

He thought of his parents. His father, a gruff but loving man. His mother, the sweetest woman he knew. Could this be real? Would his father be someone completely different? He took a large gulp of the whiskey, the heat spreading through him.
