Ethan paced his small apartment, the article on his laptop open and visible. The accusations against his literary hero, Alistair Finch, hung in the air like a shroud. He’d built his career, in a way, on the inspiration he got from Finch.

He ran his hand through his hair, a nervous gesture. The side-by-side comparisons of Finch's work and other, lesser-known writings were damning. He wanted to dismiss them, to attribute them to some grand misunderstanding, but the evidence was too compelling.

He felt a deep sense of unease, a hollowness that seemed to echo through his chest. He sat down heavily, the fight gone out of him. The world he had constructed, built on the solid foundation of Finch's genius, began to crumble around him.
