"Can you believe it?" Liam exclaimed, waving the acceptance letter in front of his roommate, Ben. Ben, who had always been the pragmatist, looked at the letter with an unreadable expression. Liam was elated. The "Bright Futures" grant, enough to cover his entire first year, was a lifesaver.

He’d almost started to believe his academic performance wouldn’t measure up to his financial needs. Now, though, the joy had turned a little sour. He'd noticed the lack of specifics in the acceptance letter. It seemed almost generic, lacking any personal touches.

Ben nodded slowly, then pointed out, “Did you see the other students who applied?” Liam had a sinking feeling in his stomach. He wasn’t as sure now. He wondered if this was as good as it seemed.
