The adoption forms lay spread out across the coffee table, a testament to Emily's unwavering enthusiasm. John sat on the couch, observing her. Every word she uttered, every gesture, carried a current of pure, unadulterated excitement. A golden retriever puppy. It sounded like a fantasy, if not a disaster.

His fingers tapped a restless rhythm on his knee. He'd never owned a dog before. The idea of the constant demands, the walks in all weather, the potential for accidents... He just wasn't sure. His mind churned with a million questions and potential problems.

“I’m just… worried about the time commitment, Em,” he said, his voice flat. He looked around the small apartment. Suddenly, it seemed even smaller, less manageable, with the addition of a dog.

Emily’s face fell slightly, and she stopped filling out the form. The puppy’s potential for chewing, for barking, for shedding, played on John’s thoughts.
