The smell of freshly baked bread filled the air of Ben’s small apartment, a sharp contrast to the aggressive bass thumping from Daniel’s stereo. Ben, stirring a pot of soup, paused. He had planned a simple, home-cooked dinner for a few close friends. Daniel's open-house pool party on the same evening felt… calculated.

He glanced at the handwritten invitation propped on the counter, the elegant script now appearing almost sinister. Daniel had always been a showman, and this felt less like a coincidence and more like a carefully orchestrated power play. The soup simmered, its comforting aroma failing to calm the rising anxiety in Ben's chest.

Ben checked his phone. No messages from any of his invited guests. He fiddled with the volume knob of the music, turning it down a notch. The silence that followed was almost worse than the noise. He really hoped people showed up.
