The editor’s rejection hung in the air like a discordant note, infecting everything. David had envisioned this day for a long time. Now, the manuscript sat on his desk, its pages looking mocking and useless. He had given them everything: his time, his emotions, his deepest hopes. The response was a polite declination that offered no useful criticism. He walked over to the window, the city sprawling below, indifferent to his disappointment. He felt a coldness creeping into his bones. He knew his mother would be so very proud of him. He knew his wife would be so very supportive. But, right now, David felt utterly alone.
