"So, ready for this, kiddo?" His father had asked earlier, his voice bright. Michael had just shrugged. Now, standing at the bar with a glass of something fizzy, he watched the other guests. He took a long swallow, the bubbles tickling his nose.

He observed the clinking of glasses, the laughter that felt a little too loud. He couldn't shake the sense of unreality. It felt like everyone was playing a part, including him.

When he looked towards his table, he could see his mother waving for him to come over. He reluctantly made his way over, and when he arrived, he was asked to speak. He braced himself, knowing what was coming, and walked towards the microphone.
