"Yeah, right," Alex mumbled under his breath, scrolling through the announcement on his phone. He slammed his fist down on the desk, startling the nearby colleague. The woman glanced over with a questioning look, then quickly returned to her own screen.

The words "synergy" and "streamlining" immediately jumped out. He knew what those meant. Cuts. Layoffs. Chaos.

He closed his eyes for a moment, picturing the bills that needed to be paid. He exhaled slowly, trying to calm his racing heart. He took another look at the email, the carefully crafted corporate speak making him feel nauseous.
