The news felt unreal, like a poorly written plot twist in a bad movie. "Gone?" Leo echoed, his voice barely a whisper. Professor Davies, his mentor and champion, was packing up his office, boxes overflowing with books and papers. Leo watched him, a slow burn of unease beginning in his gut. Davies had promised to stay until the thesis was done, to shepherd him through the final hurdle. Now, here he was, dismantling his academic life before Leo's very eyes. He kept waiting for Davies to crack, to reveal it was all a prank. The longer he waited, the more his shoulders drooped.
