He found himself tapping his pen against the desk, a nervous rhythm that echoed in the otherwise silent office. The announcement about the senior project manager role had been pending for weeks. Mark had spent countless late nights, pouring himself into his work, believing his efforts would be recognized.

He saw Sarah, his rival, coming towards him. Her smile seemed a little too bright, a little too saccharine. He gave her a tight smile in return, but his eyes betrayed him.

"Congratulations," she chirped. The words tasted like ash in his mouth. He merely nodded, feigning interest. He thought about the board meeting that afternoon. He probably wouldn't get a word in edgewise.
