The paper crumbled slightly as she held it. Amelia traced the looping script with a hesitant finger. Her mother's resignation letter. It was from a job her mother had always presented as a stepping stone. This letter was different. It spoke of a place that "undermined her potential" and "held her back." Amelia felt a flush rise in her cheeks. The woman had always come across as an unwavering figure.

She pushed herself away from the desk, a feeling of unease settling in her stomach. The sun streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, but she felt as though the light had gone. She moved to the kitchen.
