The old house felt empty without the familiar scent of her. Yet, there it was, the letter. From her mother. The woman who had made her life hell.

He picked it up gingerly, the paper thin and yellowed. He read the words, the words of someone who finally understood. He heard the pleading tone as he did. The years of resentment flooded back, along with the memories of neglect and manipulation.

He dropped the letter on the floor. He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture. The apology was a sham. He wouldn't give her the satisfaction. The house felt quiet and safe. He would keep it that way.
