"Your mother... had a child," the words, spoken by her grandmother, still echoed in Emily's ears. Emily had always been close to her grandmother. That's why she now felt a sharp pang of disappointment.

Emily sat at the kitchen table, her hands flat against the wooden surface. There was a portrait of her late mother on the wall across from her, which she now felt she was seeing in an entirely new light.

She didn't say anything, but the silence felt thick, charged. A shadow of doubt had begun to creep into the edges of her belief in everything she had known.
