The old desk creaked as he opened the top drawer, his hands trembling. Inside, nestled amongst old letters and forgotten trinkets, was a small, unassuming passbook. The name on the account: Maria. His wife. He felt a sudden, sharp pain in his chest.

He flipped through the pages, the numbers gradually building to an enormous total. The passbook revealed a financial landscape he’d been completely unaware of. The account was in her name only.

He found himself replaying their conversations about money, about their future. He couldn’t reconcile the woman he thought he knew with the details contained in this book.
