The accusation, delivered by Mr. Abernathy through the thin walls of their shared duplex, hung heavy in the air. "The stomping. It was relentless!"

Martha sighed inwardly, a breath she barely contained. "Stomping?" she echoed, keeping her voice even. The old man, always quick to judge. She had only been in the kitchen all night.

She glanced at her hardwood floors, polished to a gleam. She listened intently, but all she could hear was the muted sounds of the city. She knew what to expect.
