The attic air tasted of dust and forgotten things. Amelia wrinkled her nose, pulling the yellowed paper from the old trunk. Her mother’s handwriting, neat and precise, detailed a list of absurdities: "Learn to tango. Swim with dolphins. See the Northern Lights." Amelia scoffed. Her mother had been a librarian, devoted to Dewey Decimal classifications and sensible shoes.

A knot tightened in her stomach. Amelia ran a hand through her hair, smoothing down a stray strand. The whole thing felt… off. Like a poorly written play. Her fingers traced the list. It felt like a practical joke, a cruel hoax her mother wouldn't inflict on her.

"Dolphins?" she muttered, the word sounding alien and out of place in the silent room. She tossed the list back into the trunk, the lid slamming shut with a finality that felt hollow, not conclusive.
