The afternoon sun beat down, intensifying the heat already prickling at Martha's neck. Mrs. Davies, armed with a packet of seed catalogs and a disarmingly innocent expression, proposed the garden idea. Martha found herself staring, not at the seed catalogs, but at the meticulously organized shed in her own backyard. She’d spent years perfecting the arrangement.

"Just a little corner, dear," Mrs. Davies repeated, her voice sweet as honey, gesturing toward the section closest to Martha's prized rose bushes. The thought of those delicate blooms, trampled by careless feet, sent a sharp wave of anxiety through her. Martha’s fingers traced the edge of the porch railing.

She couldn't shake the image of her own meticulously planned garden, now threatened by Mrs. Davies’s unknown horticultural intentions. The woman’s smile seemed... calculated. Martha needed time to process this. She needed to think. "I'll have to consider it," she finally replied, her voice strained, hoping to buy herself some space.
