The vibrant green of Evelyn’s lawn was interrupted only by the cheerful red of Mrs. Olsen’s hat. The woman beamed, a gardening trowel clutched in her hand like a weapon. The proposed plot was adjacent to her own. Evelyn’s carefully planned flowerbeds, the result of years of trial and error, were now potentially under threat.

Evelyn's heart thumped a nervous rhythm. She’d meticulously chosen the plants, considering sun exposure and soil composition. The mere suggestion of another gardener’s interference grated on her. A wave of irritation washed over her. "And what kind of… vegetables were you thinking?" she asked, her voice deliberately controlled.

Mrs. Olsen’s enthusiasm, Evelyn realized with a flash of annoyance, was a smokescreen. She envisioned the inevitable chaos, the potential for unwanted pests and diseases. The peace of her garden was about to be broken.
