The email shimmered on Maya’s screen, a digital serpent promising acclaim. “Your essay, ‘The Art of the Unsaid,’ has been selected for publication!” It was a sentence she’d written years ago, a lifetime ago, about the way her grandmother communicated entirely through eyebrow raises and the precise angle of a teacup. Now, it was being held up as some kind of literary beacon. A knot tightened in her stomach. She clicked the link, a hesitant tap that felt heavier than it should. The website, plastered with bright, overly enthusiastic graphics, felt vaguely insulting.

Her eyes scanned the glossy layout. Her essay, shrunk and boxed, nestled amongst essays with titles like "Why I Love Volcanoes" and "My Journey With Guinea Pigs." The entire situation seemed far too cheerful. A thin sheen of sweat began to prickle on her forehead. *This can't be real,* she thought, even as she read her own words, still knowing every syllable by heart.
