The phone call had come at the worst possible time. Michael, slumped over his desk, head resting on his crossed arms, listened to his son's declaration. "I'm joining the Church of Scientology," his son announced. The words seemed to hang in the air, heavy and unmoving.

Michael lifted his head, feeling as though his brain was packed with cotton. His limbs ached. He leaned back in his chair, staring at the ceiling. He felt a profound sense of weariness, a deep-seated urge to disconnect from the world. He wanted the day to just end, to fade away into nothing.
