Gemotions

The fluorescent lights of the campus library hummed a monotonous tune. Maya rubbed her eyes, a gritty sensation scratching at the delicate skin around them. The rejection email from the scholarship committee sat open on her laptop, the words blurring despite her efforts to focus. A yawn, wide and cavernous, escaped her lips, followed by a stretch that did little to alleviate the dull ache in her shoulders. She leaned back in the uncomfortable chair, her head lolling to one side.

A sigh escaped her, carrying with it the weight of the past few weeks, the endless essays and applications. She felt like sinking into the depths of the chair, vanishing from the world for a moment. Her eyelids felt heavy, like lead weights. This was a battle she couldn't win, she thought.

A student walked past, and the faint rustle of their backpack and the sound of their foot steps echoed through the quiet. Maya barely noticed. The thought of getting up, walking home, facing another night of ramen dinners and worry, filled her with a profound sense of inertia.
