The air conditioning hummed, a low, constant vibration that seemed to lull Chloe into a state of profound stillness. Liam, her friend, was excitedly recounting tales of his career as a consultant, spinning a web of jargon and supposed successes. Chloe's eyelids felt impossibly heavy, a leaden weight pulling them downwards. She fought the urge to close her eyes, her head nodding involuntarily.

The vibrant colors of the restaurant seemed to fade, the sounds of conversation blurring into a dull murmur. Her body felt sluggish, leaden, as if she were wading through thick syrup. She struggled to keep up, her responses were slow, and her thoughts scattered.

"You look a bit out of it, Chloe," Liam said, his voice laced with concern.

She mumbled a reply, but she didn’t know what she said. Later, she checked his LinkedIn. It was a façade.
