He stared at the spreadsheet, the numbers swimming before his eyes. Each digit seemed to vibrate, blurring into a confusing mess. He rubbed his eyes, trying to clear his vision, but the effort was too much.

It wasn't a secret anymore. The whispers had solidified into fact. Emily, with her flashy new car and endless vacations, was earning more than him. He, with his years of experience, the one who actually ran the place, was getting out-earned by someone who’d only been there a year.

His head rested on his hand, his elbow on the desk. He thought about the weekend, the promise of quiet, of rest. Everything felt like too much effort. He wanted to switch off.
