The postman’s footsteps outside were the first sound of the day. A moan of protest rose in Felix's throat as he got out of bed. The short walk to retrieve the mail felt like traversing a desert. He unlocked the mailbox, reaching for the metal flap. There, alongside the usual bills and junk, was the card.

He barely glanced at it, knowing it would be a birthday card from someone. He shuffled back inside, the floor creaking under his weight. He tossed the mail onto the table and let out a long breath.

He leaned against the wall, finding himself unable to keep his eyes open. The thought of opening the card, of reading the message, of even *thinking* about who it might be, felt absolutely exhausting. He was going to sit down. Maybe for a minute.
