The gentle rocking of the boat was a lullaby. The sun, sinking towards the horizon, painted the water in shades of orange and purple. Emily watched the sunset, the colors a beautiful distraction from the man speaking next to her. He was leaning forward, voice low and intimate. His words were a blur, but the gist was clear: a perfect evening. They were both in love. He kept repeating the word “us.” Emily felt a deep, pervasive weariness. This feeling was familiar. She wanted to rest her head against something. It was so difficult to follow his narrative. Why was everything feeling so slow? The world faded slightly, the boat seeming to drift further away.
