The lecture hall swam before Maya's eyes. The professor’s voice, a droning monotone, seemed to originate from the bottom of a well. Her head nodded, a slow, heavy bob that threatened to detach her neck. She blinked, trying to focus on the slides, but the words blurred into an incomprehensible jumble of letters. A yawn escaped her, stretching her jaw muscles painfully. She rested her chin on her hand, the weight of her head making her arm ache. The notification on her phone for the email she had been waiting for had just popped up. She knew it meant bad news.
