“Is this real?” Leo mumbled, his voice thick with the aftereffects of a long night spent studying and, now, the crushing news. The financial aid officer’s words echoed in his ears, a confusing jumble of jargon and regret. His shoulders slumped, and he felt a profound fatigue creep over him. His stomach churned. He hadn't slept for weeks to get where he was, and it was all for nothing. He stared blankly at the floor, the vibrant patterns of the rug suddenly appearing dull and indistinct. His eyelids grew heavy, his grip on the chair tightening.
