The world felt muffled as Maya sat down on the couch. Her head throbbed, a dull ache that echoed the anxieties bubbling inside her. She felt like she was wading through water, movement slow and difficult. The evidence was irrefutable. Her son, Ethan, had been acting strangely, and now she knew why. The secret account revealed a life she knew nothing about.

She’d stumbled upon it by accident, a suggested friend on his tablet. The account was filled with photos of him, but the captions were crude and vulgar. His friends were different. Their activities were something else entirely. She felt a sting behind her eyes, the beginning of tears. She had to address this, but all she wanted to do was close her eyes and shut everything out.
