The world seemed to be fading around Maya. The flickering fluorescent lights of the hospital hallway blurred, and her legs felt like lead. She’d been sitting at her father’s bedside for hours, the rhythmic beeping of the machines a monotonous soundtrack to her exhaustion. She glanced across the room, the sunlight streaming in the window was a reminder of time passing. She found a leather-bound book beside his favorite armchair.

She opened the book, her fingers numb. Inside was a collection of his writings, poems she’d never known existed. But hidden within the pages, a folded piece of paper caught her eye. It was a letter, addressed to her brother, who had died years ago.
