The silence of the late evening was a heavy blanket in Liam's small apartment. He'd been working on a project all day, his brain feeling like a collection of disconnected wires. He needed a break, a distraction from the mental maze. Finding an old desk in the corner, he finally cleared the dust off and opened its drawers.

He unearthed a small box, its metal surface tarnished with age. Inside, nestled among other forgotten items, was a letter. He was surprised to find it was a letter he had written to a girl he had loved from afar in high school.

He leaned against the desk, the words blurring before his eyes. The sentiment was earnest, almost painful in its vulnerability. Liam felt the corners of his mouth lift slightly, as memories and the pull of the past made him feel something he couldn't quite name.
