I blinked, trying to focus on the black words of the notice. The paper seemed to waver, and the room was spinning. I felt a profound reluctance to move, as if every muscle in my body was refusing to cooperate. My head was resting on the kitchen table and I'd been scrolling through my phone.

The weight of the situation, the sudden, jarring reality, was almost unbearable. All I wanted was to crawl under the covers and disappear. I didn't want to think, to worry, to… anything.

"No," I mumbled into the wood, my voice muffled.
