The drive home felt longer than usual. John listened, barely, to the music coming from the radio. His shoulders were slumped, and the steering wheel seemed heavy in his hands. He felt a profound sense of exhaustion washing over him. The car’s interior was warm, and the hum of the engine was a dull lullaby. His mind struggled to process David's words.

He glanced in the rearview mirror, checking his expression in the fading light. He looked older, somehow. The news had left him feeling hollowed out. David was leaving for Oregon, and John felt the ache in his chest deepen with every passing mile.

He pulled into his driveway, the gravel crunching under the tires. The thought of getting out of the car, of facing the empty house, was daunting. He just wanted to go to bed, pull the covers up over his head, and forget everything for a while.
