Sunlight streamed through the kitchen window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. John stifled a yawn, the muscles in his jaw aching with the effort. He’d been up since dawn, chasing after his hyperactive toddler. Now, he wanted nothing more than to curl up on the sofa and do absolutely nothing. The doorbell rang, a jarring sound. He shuffled towards the door, his steps slow and deliberate.

A courier stood on the porch, holding a worn manila envelope. "For John Miller?" he asked. John took the envelope, the corners of his eyes drooping. He mumbled a thanks and closed the door. Back in the kitchen, he dropped the envelope onto the counter. It was addressed in a familiar scrawl. He recognized his old friend, David's hand writing. He felt a dull ache in his chest, a heavy feeling of regret. He felt a desire to lie down.
