The overhead fluorescent lights of the DMV hummed, a monotonous drone that felt like it burrowed into Amelia’s skull. Her eyelids felt heavy, lead weights threatening to shut them for good. She leaned against the cool wall, the chipped paint offering little comfort. The air conditioning blasted, raising gooseflesh despite her thick cardigan. "Amelia Miller?" a voice crackled through the intercom. Responding felt like an impossible task.

She dragged herself toward the counter, each step a monumental effort. The woman behind the desk, a blur of red lipstick and bored indifference, handed her a thick envelope. “Sign here.” Amelia fumbled with the pen, her hand trembling. The paperwork felt significant, but the details seemed distant, unimportant.

The envelope's contents, however, jolted her. A letter. A birth certificate. Another Miller, a name she'd never encountered before, listed as her half-brother. Her vision swam. The room tilted. This information was a massive, unexpected weight, and she just wanted to lie down.
