He stared at the email on his screen, the words swimming before his eyes. The office was quiet, the only sounds the whirring of the air conditioner and the rhythmic tapping of a coworker's keyboard. His eyelids felt impossibly heavy. He needed to finish this report, but the task seemed insurmountable.

The email's subject line, "Regarding Your Father," had been enough to drain all the energy from him. The sender was a lawyer. The content, a bombshell. A half-brother. A will. His head throbbed.

He leaned back in his chair, the leather creaking in protest. The ceiling lights seemed to pulse, and his vision narrowed. He wished he could just shut down for a while.
