“What did you find, Dad?” Little Timmy’s voice, a bright sound, cut through the quiet of the empty lot. Marcus pushed himself up slowly from the dusty ground. He felt like his limbs were made of concrete. He had found a time capsule, a large metal cylinder, and had absolutely no recollection of ever burying it. He just wanted to rest.

He wiped the sweat from his brow, his movements slow and deliberate. The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the lot. He looked at the cylinder, then at his son. Timmy’s eyes were bright with curiosity, but Marcus felt only a profound indifference. He leaned down, placing a hand on the cool metal. He fought a desire to simply fall where he stood.
