He found it tucked away in the bedside drawer, a small, leather-bound notebook. His wife, Clara, was out for the evening at a book club. The house was quiet, a stark contrast to the persistent thrumming in his ears. He sat on the edge of the bed, feeling as if the mattress was pulling him down into its depths. His limbs felt heavy, and the world seemed a little blurry around the edges.
