A heavy blanket seemed to have settled over David's shoulders, making every task a monumental undertaking. He’d woken with the same feeling, a deep-seated resistance to the day. The pawn shop’s stale air was not a welcome change, but the oppressive heat of the afternoon had driven him inside seeking respite from the sun. The air conditioning was failing to make a dent.

He leaned against a counter, watching the shop owner polish a brass clock. The rhythmic movement, normally soothing, just felt… slow. He couldn't muster the enthusiasm to even browse. His eyes drifted over the clutter, cataloging the chipped guitars and broken radios. His mind felt thick, like syrup.

Suddenly, a particular gleam caught his eye. It was nestled amongst a collection of costume jewelry, a ring he remembered seeing on his grandmother’s hand. The intricate filigree, the tiny diamonds – it was unmistakable. He felt a jolt of… something. He gestured towards the ring, the movement feeling laborious.
