The click of the keyboard felt too loud, the hum of the computers a relentless assault on my senses. I felt leaden, my movements lacking any grace. The new guy, Daniel, was a blur of movement and sound. He was, by all accounts, ready to absorb everything.

I felt as though I was moving through water, each word a significant effort. Explaining the coding intricacies was a mountain that seemed impossible to climb. The simple act of explaining felt like an act of will.

The day stretched on, each hour an eternity. Every task was difficult. Every conversation demanding. I sat at my desk, trying to appear awake. I just wanted to drift. To be elsewhere.
