"Alex, we're going to give you a shot at quarterback." Coach Henderson's words were a surprise, but Alex, usually enthusiastic, just nodded, feeling a strange passivity. The football field stretched before him, a vast expanse he was now expected to command. He was a wide receiver.

He felt as though his muscles were filled with lead. His arm strength felt weak, his passes wobbling and slow. He couldn’t seem to get his footing, stumbling during the drills. He found it difficult to concentrate, his mind wandering. The team, once a source of thrill, now felt like a chore.
