The fluorescent lights of the office building seemed to drain all the energy from Chloe. She sat on the hard plastic chair in the waiting room, fidgeting. The minutes ticked by, each one an eternity. The sounds of the office, the ringing phones, the hurried footsteps, felt distant, like they were happening in a different world.

She wished she was anywhere but here.

The questions the interviewer asked came in and out of focus. She struggled to gather her thoughts, her answers coming out stilted and hesitant. She felt like she was trapped in a slow-motion video.
