The reception hall throbbed with music and laughter, but for Ian, it was a cacophony. The food sat heavy in his stomach, and he felt a general lack of enthusiasm for anything. He’d been avoiding the dance floor, the conversations, everything. He preferred the cool, quiet solitude of the lobby.

Then, as he glanced back into the ballroom, he saw her. Across the room, near the doorway, was Sophia. He felt a distinct shift in his mood, as though the air had become thick and heavy. He did not know whether to approach or hide. He chose to remain, and the weight remained.
