He stared at the blank television screen, the remote lying useless in his hand. The day stretched before him, an endless, uninviting expanse. He felt a deep, pervasive weariness. This morning, he'd been awoken by the sound of hushed, hurried words coming from the kitchen. It was his wife, Sarah. He pretended to still be asleep, listening to her clandestine conversation.

Now, he was alone, the silence amplifying the heavy feeling that had settled over him. When she came back into the living room, he asked, "Who were you talking to?"

Her smile felt forced, her shoulders tight. "Just a friend," she said, before abruptly changing the subject. The atmosphere shifted, a subtle, unspoken tension permeating the space, making him feel even heavier.
