A general feeling of disconnection had settled over Emily. The world felt muffled, the edges of things blurred. The doorbell rang, a sharp sound that echoed strangely in the silence of the house. It was her mother, back from a trip to the storage unit, bearing gifts.

She entered the living room, her arms laden with boxes. "Look what I found, darling! All your old school projects!" Emily stared at them – stacks of folders, artwork, and carefully preserved reports. Each one carried the weight of her past.

She sat on the sofa, feeling a peculiar sensation of inertia, as though her mind couldn't quite catch up with the present. She reached for a folder, and the movement was laborious.
