Liam felt like he was sinking through quicksand. His thoughts were slow and muddy, his body unresponsive. He found the wallet while walking home, kicking a small stone in the dirt. It had clearly fallen out of someone’s pocket.

He opened it, and the sight of the cash brought no joy, only a sense of weary resignation. He felt a profound reluctance to deal with it, a deep lack of energy for the task. The money felt like a dead weight in his hand.

He sat on the curb, the rough concrete biting into his skin. "Fantastic," he said, the word devoid of any enthusiasm. He closed his eyes, already picturing the long day ahead.
