Gemotions

The morning sun felt heavy on Amelia’s eyelids. She dragged herself out of bed, each movement a chore. The cereal box seemed miles away. A vague unease had settled in her stomach for days now, a constant internal hum. Her thumb, swiping through the DNA results on her phone, felt like it was moving through glue. The word “surprise” blinked at her, a taunt in the digital display.

She pushed at the report. A lifetime of family dinners, of inherited mannerisms, of shared stories, crumbled in front of her. The comfortable certainty of who she was dissolved into a thick, disorienting fog. The kitchen, usually so welcoming, felt hostile, the light from the window too bright, the air thick with unspoken truths.

The coffee brewing seemed to take an eternity. Even the familiar aroma of the beans, typically a source of comfort, couldn't quite pierce the pervasive sense of detachment that had claimed her. She considered calling her mother but the words seemed to stick in her throat, a sticky residue refusing to be swallowed.
